Impact
Numbers that represent real systems built, real people trained, and real research enabled.
Research Infrastructure
- 1,603 datasets published on UCLA Dataverse
- 54,655 files archived
- 142,300+ dataset downloads
- 2.9 PB of data processed through Redivis in 2024
- 2 minutes — Carceral Ecologies pipeline (down from 318 minutes)
UCLA Dataverse supports self-service data publishing across disciplines. Redivis provides a compliant, governed environment for restricted and sensitive datasets — P3/P4 data that had no institutional home before 2021.
Two of UCLA's six 2024 Public Impact Research Award winners were directly supported by DSC infrastructure and services.
Education & Training
- 28 workshops delivered through UC Carpentries
- 2,896 learners reached system-wide
- 10 campuses in the UC Carpentries network
- 14+ open science lessons in development (IMLS curriculum)
- 500+ annual learners at peak UC Carpentries scale
UC Carpentries delivers computational and data skills training across the UC system. The IMLS Open Science Curriculum trains librarians as open science educators — a train-the-trainers model that multiplies reach beyond any single institution.
Workforce Development
- 1,175 documented service interactions
- 190 consultations handled by DataSquad students (24%)
- 100% placement rate for a full DataSquad cohort
DataSquad trains undergraduates as research data consultants. Students contributed to award-winning research while gaining professional experience. The program force-multiplies DSC capacity without proportional staffing increases.
Grants & Funding
- $1,850,000 — Sloan Foundation, UC OSPO Network (Co-PI, UCLA Lead)
- $237,000 — IMLS, Open Science Curriculum for Librarians (PI)
These grants reflect external validation of the work and fund programs with multi-campus and national reach.
